Situated high above the banks of the sacred Narmada River, Ahilya Fort, once the capital of one the Holkar dynasty and the famed queen Ahilya Bai Holkar, is today a heritage hotel that transports one back into time. Built in the holy city of Maheshwar, the fort is surrounded by numerous temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and other hindu divinities. Not far away is Mandu, a marvel of Islamic architecture. Here one witnesses the life lived on the ‘ghats’ or banks of the river, even unchanged today in its rhythm and essence as it was during ancient times. India initially was inhabitied at places like this and Varanasi where the river was and is more than just a river. It is the mother, the life giver and the nucleus of life itself. Temples and religion, hindu life and festivals, traditions and rituals, morning prayers and evening worships, nature are some of the experiences one can have while reposing amidst the 18th century grandeur recreated at this fort palace. A part of recreating the magic are the air cooled rooms perfumed with the scent of khus vetiver. Come and relive a slice of history, a part of Hindu India and return refreshed, rejuvenated and dare we say, reborn.
